Description: This course is an introductory course covering major topics in geology, oceanography, meterology, astronomy, scientific method, and philosophy of science. This course is designed for non-science majors. Not open to students who have received credit for GEOL 300 or GEOL 310.

GEOL 347 Geologic Mining History of the Mother Lode 3 Units

Description: This is an introductory course covering the mining and geologic history of California's Mother Lode region. Emphasis is on understanding the formation of the area's gold deposits, past and present mining methods, and the legacy left by the early miners.

GEOL 390 Field Studies in Geology .5-4 Units
Prerequisite: None.
Course Transferable to UC/CSU
Hours: 40 hours LEC ; 100 hours LAB
Description: This course involves the study of geologic principles and processes of specific regions (mountains, deserts, great valley, coastal region, etc.). Course content varies according to field trip destination but may include topics in physical geology, environmental geology, economic geology, and/or introduction to tools and techniques used for Geoscience field research (e.g. map and compass, Global Positioning System (GPS), Geographic Information Systems (GIS), etc.). For specific details, see the course topic description(s) listed in the schedule. Field excursions are required and students will be responsible for providing their own lodging (or camping equipment) and meals. This course may be repeated up to four times under a new topic or destination.

This is a one unit field class consisting of 3-hour pre- and post- class sessions and 3 days of field classes touring Historic Mother Lode mining areas. The pre trip class will include an introduction to the geology of the Mother Lode and mining operations past and present in this historic area. Field trip details will be discussed, and information regarding meeting times and places will be handed out, along with maps. On Saturday March 21, 2009 the class will take an underground tour of the Lincoln Mine in Sutter Creek as well as a surface tour of the Kennedy Mine in Jackson. Fees will be charged at both facilities. On Saturday, Mar 28, 2009 the class will visit Yuba gold Dredge #17 in Yuba City. This dredge, the only one of its kind in North America, was recently re-built dredge after Yuba #21 sank several years ago. On Sunday, March 29, 2009 the class will visit the Mike Nevius Historic Mining Equipment Exhibit in Nevada City. Mike is a Mother lode mining history expert whose hobby is restoring old mining equipment. It will be a rare opportunity to watch an 1890 stamp mill in actual operation. The final class meeting is on Friday, April 3, 2009, at which time students will turn in reports and share digital pictures taken during the field trip. All transportation to and from the field trip areas will be in private cars. All meals and fees will be at student expense. Mining Geology of Nevada

This is a one unit field class consisting of 3-hour pre and post class sessions and 3 days of field classes touring modern gold mining operations in Nevada. The pre-trip class is on Friday, April 17, 2009 and will include an introduction to the gold occurrences and mining operations past and present in the state of Nevada. Field trip details will be discussed, and information regarding meeting times and places will be handed out, along with maps. On Friday, April 24, 2009 the class will visit the Mackay Silver Collection, mining exhibits, and mineral collections at the University of Nevada, Reno. Admission to the museum is free. On Saturday, April 25, 2009 the class will examine the geology and mines north of Reno. This will include a rare opportunity to collect minerals from past mining activity in this famous district. On Sunday, April 26, 2009 the class will visit historic Virginia City to observe past and present silver mining and milling activity. The final class meeting is on Friday, May 1, 2009, at which time students will turn in reports and share digital pictures taken during the field trip. All transportation to and from the field trip areas will be in private cars. All meals and fees will be at student expense.
